Wordpress themes: The Vanilla of the Web? Stifled by Success?

Wordpress, Wordpress....with a dash of even more wordpress. So many blogs, websites, podcasts and more, use wordpress. My question is, has wordpress got overused, stifled by it's own success?

Wordpress comes with a series of default templates, along with some default plug-ins. These templates are instantaneously recognizable, while good by themselves, the fact these templates have been used so much makes them (intellectually speaking), worth less. The content on a site might be great, but by seeing that infamous default wordpress theme, or any of the other themes that have been over-used, it makes me think less of the site, like the person running it couldn't be bothered to step out from the crowd, be different, and shine.

These days, when using wordpress, it is difference that matters, differentiating yourself sets you apart, makes you memorable, whether that be using a theme no one else is, or whether that be getting a designer to make one for you, or buying one of the growing number of commercial themes.

Play time is over, the default theme is dead.

Actually, I've noticed one thing. If you just put in your own header image and play with the colors, you WILL set yourself apart from the rest of the web. It doesn't actually look like the (in)famous Kubrick, but more like your own.

So I should become a web designer then?

The default theme died along time ago! Any blog worth it's salt shouldn't be using it. Customisation is key, personal customasation is better - users can change the theme to there liking, filter out what they want to read, drag & drop content where they want it!
